Reverb and delay: depth without muddying the mix
Pre-delay, tail time, sends versus inserts, and the trick of EQing the effect rather than the source to gain space without losing definition.
Depth is built by contrast
Reverb and delay are the tools of the third dimension: panning places things across, level places them forward or back, and time-based effects place them in depth. But they work by comparison, not in absolute terms. An element sounds distant because another sounds close; wet the whole mix equally and you don't get depth, you get uniform fog.
Hence the most important decision and the one least often made consciously: what stays dry. Usually the kick, the bass and the lead vocal, because they're the anchors. Everything else can move back, and it's precisely because there are dry references that the distance registers.
Sends, not inserts
Putting a reverb as an insert on every track that needs one seems natural and is the fast route to a murky mix. Each plugin generates its own space, and five different spaces at once don't read as depth but as dirt, because the ear can't reconcile incompatible rooms.
- Set up one or two reverbs on send channels: a short one for closeness and a long one for depth usually covers a whole record.
- Send each track to the relevant one at whatever amount it needs. Different amounts of the same space is what creates believable depth.
- Leave the return at 100% wet: you make the dry/wet balance with the send level.
- With inserts you lose that relationship and have to re-tune the wet amount every time you move the fader.

The return filter is the highest-yield setting on the list and the one most people skip. An unfiltered reverb returns low end that piles onto the mix's own and highs that compete with sibilance: filter both ends and the same amount of reverb sounds more spacious and dirties far less.
When delay is the better idea
In a dense mix, reverb is expensive: it sounds continuously and occupies the gaps you need for things to be intelligible. Delay, by contrast, only sounds when there's something to repeat, so it fills the silences between phrases and gets out of the way when the vocal comes back.
Which is why a lot of modern music with tight mixes uses considerably more delay than reverb. An eighth-note delay with two or three filtered repeats gives a sense of space at no cost in clarity. - Send, unless you want a very specific effect on one track. With a send you have a single reverb shared by several elements, which places them in the same space and sounds coherent, and it uses far less CPU. With inserts you end up with five different rooms playing at once, one of the most common causes of a murky mix.
- What is pre-delay and what value should I use?
- It's the time between the direct sound and the first reflection. Delaying the tail lets the attack through clean, so you gain clarity without giving up space. Between 20 and 40 ms works well on vocals; higher values separate them so much that the reverb starts to read as a separate echo.
- How much reverb is too much?
- The practical check: if removing it leaves the mix dry but clear, and adding it makes it spacious but hard to follow the lyric, there's too much. Another reliable sign is needing to raise the send every time you add an element — a signal that the reverb is masking rather than placing.
- Why do people EQ the reverb?
- Because a tail with low end muddies, and one with too much treble hisses and competes with sibilance. Filtering the return below 200-300 Hz and above 8-10 kHz leaves the reverb contributing space where the ear perceives it and out of the zones where it only gets in the way. It's the single move that most cleans up a mix with effects.
- Tempo-synced delay or milliseconds?
- Synced when you want the repeats to be part of the rhythm; milliseconds when you want depth without drawing attention. A short unsynced delay of 80 to 120 ms gives a sense of space and barely registers as an echo.
- Can delay replace reverb?
- Partly, and often usefully. A delay only occupies the gaps between phrases whereas a reverb sounds continuously, so it gives depth with far less loss of clarity. In dense mixes it's common to lean more on delay than reverb for exactly that reason.
