Training your ear: method, routine and how long it takes
Which skills train separately, why short sessions beat long ones, and how to tell whether you're actually improving.
The skill that holds up all the others
You can memorise what every control on a compressor does and still not know when to use it. You can read a full map of the spectrum and still not locate the resonance dirtying a guitar. All the technical knowledge in mixing rests on a prior skill that isn't acquired by reading: hearing the difference.
The good news is that it isn't a gift. It's timbre memory, and it works like any other memory: repeated exposure, known context and immediate confirmation of whether you were right. That last point is the one nearly everyone skips when trying to train alone, and it's the one that makes it work.
What trains, and separately
«Having a good ear» isn't one capability, and treating it as if it were is what makes people plateau. They're several independent skills trained by different exercises, and being good at one doesn't drag the others along.

A routine you'll actually keep
The plan that works isn't the most ambitious one: it's the one you're still doing in week four. Ten minutes a day, at the same time and on the same listening system, beats any hour-long plan you abandon on day ten.
- Weeks 1-2: frequencies only, wide bands. The goal is telling low, mid and high apart without hesitating.
- Weeks 3-4: frequencies with narrower bands. Here you start naming specific zones.
- Weeks 5-6: add dynamics. Recognising whether there's compression and whether the attack is fast or slow.
- Weeks 7-8: add space and stereo. Amount of reverb, width, position.
- After that: mix the exercises and keep the habit. The skill fades if you drop it.
Two details that change the return. First: use the same listening system throughout a phase, because you're building a reference and switching headphones daily blurs it. Second: train rested. At the end of a long mixing session your ear no longer distinguishes anything, and practising then only consolidates mistakes.
Measuring instead of assuming
The feeling of progress is a poor guide. At first it's noticeable enough to motivate on its own, and then the curve flattens exactly while you're consolidating what you learned: that's when many people quit, convinced they've stalled. The only defence is having a number.

Frequently asked questions
- How long before I notice improvement?
- With short daily sessions, most people start identifying wide bands within two or three weeks. Sharpening the precision — telling 800 Hz from 1.2 kHz — takes months. The curve is fast at first and then flattens, so the discouraging part arrives exactly when you're genuinely improving.
- How long should I practise each day?
- Ten or fifteen minutes, then stop. Ear training fatigues both hearing and attention far faster than other skills, and past a certain point your answers get worse within the same session. Five days of ten minutes returns considerably more than one Sunday of an hour.
- Do I need good gear to train?
- Not to start. Ordinary headphones are enough to learn to recognise wide bands, which is 80% of the practical benefit. What does matter is using the same system throughout a stretch: you're building a reference, and changing device daily blurs it.
- Is it any use if I don't have perfect pitch?
- Perfect pitch doesn't come into it. Recognising frequencies, compression or stereo width is timbre memory and relative comparison, and that trains at any age. In fact nearly every mixing engineer works without perfect pitch.
- What do I train first?
- Frequencies, without question. It's the skill with the greatest immediate return because EQ is the most frequent decision in a mix. Once you identify bands comfortably, move on to dynamics and then to space.
- How do I know I'm actually improving?
- By keeping records. The feeling of progress is unreliable, especially once the curve flattens. A success rate measured on the same kind of exercise, week by week, is the only thing that distinguishes improving from getting used to it.
